Amongst the predictions suggested at the start of the study, the author and his team thought that the firefighters would only have little time on the field to think of all the options and that they would only consider two options: that which was intuitively their favorite and another, which would be used for comparison to demonstrate why the favored option was the best. The task was to study how firefighters make choices in the heat of the moment, as part of a contract struck with the US Army.
